Perpetua Type Specimen Poster

The Saga of Perpetua
Project objective:
Work with type samplings that have already been set and in galleys for use. Rethink the way that the lines or letters of type have been displayed.
Tell a story about Perpetua typeface and incorporate the type that has already been set. Design an attractive tabloid poster for the typeface Perpetua. Use the found type from the letterpress studio and type you set with metal type and digitally. Write text and typeset it to pull the forms together. Sketch, mock up, layout.
Learn to work with a grid to shape the page and design an attractive composition. Develop skills in setting type, exploring alignment, scale, visual contrast, margins, column widths, and page layout.

Project approach:
Going into the design phase of the project, I wanted to create a composition that was organized and spaced out, but also gives a lot of information. I wanted to put my information in paragraphs rather than bullet points or short phrases. I felt like it would make the composition more interesting and fill up some more space. I decided to go with the slanted layout to make it more interesting. I started with a couple design ideas, including two compositions with vertical layouts and one with a slanted layout. I immediately found that the slanted layout was my favorite. I started playing around with the components of my design. For the headlines and paragraphs, I originally didn't have the columns and no margins on the edges of the paper. After rearranging my four paragraphs, I found a way to put them in their own columns in a way that worked well with the large Ps that are the focal points of the composition. I also manipulated the paragraphs to mirror the shape of a P. In my design process, I was brainstorming ways to add the alphabet into the design, and after talking with my professor, we came up with layering the letters over the Ps. I also played with the opacity throughout the poster to create some variety with the black and white. I really like how this came out and how well the composition as a whole is cohesive.
